De nombreux pays industrialisés font face à une croissance structurellement faible et, dans le même temps, à une pression environnementale toujours plus forte. Le verdissement de l’économie peut-il impulser une nouvelle vague de croissance ? La croissance et la protection de l’environnement sont-elles compatibles ? Une croissance sans fin est-elle possible dans un monde fini ? La limite des ressources impose-t-elle de repenser les modes de croissance ? Économiste de l’environnement de renom et professeur à l’Institute for Sustainable Solutions de l’université de Portland (Etats-Unis), Robert Costanza abordera lors de cette session ces questions qui font l’objet de vifs débats.

“Planet boundaries” are among the most debated constraints on economic growth. Some authors consider environmental protection measures and green technologies as the source of a new wave of growth. Others believe growth and environment are compatible, and that there are some “win-win” policies. Finally, there are those for which infinite growth is impossible on a finite planet, and who assert that we will have to forget about growth sooner or later.

Dr. Robert Costanza, University Professor of Sustainability at the Institute for Sustainable Solutions at Portland State University, will present the view of “ecological economists” on this hot debate. As co-founder and former president of the International Society for Ecological Economics, he will explain how this “community” apprehends the interactions between economy and the environment, and the implication for growth prospects.

Is the finitude of the planet an issue for growth today and tomorrow, or only in very the long run ? Is immaterial growth the easy way forward ? These are some of the questions Robert Costanza will address.
